I have been taking this magic pill for many years now and I never feel good about myself without it. I am talking about the wonders that physical exercise does for my mind and body.

You read it right. Exercise is not only for the body, but for me personally, it helps my mind function better. Having a sexy and fit body is more of a side effect. I feel that I am more efficient at work and more creative in coming up with solutions to various problems if I get the right amount of exercise.

Exercise does wonders for our physical and mental health. For busy executives, regular exercise helps to keep our minds sharp and alert.

Ofcourse, there is not one rule as to the right amount of exercise for anyone. It largely depends on the work that you do (your profession), the kind of lifestyle that you have, your body type, body weight, and your – GOAL. It goes without saying that the more weight that you need to lose, the more physical exertion that you should do because there is more fats and calories to burn.  The kind of work that you have can determine how physically active you are. Office-based work that requires a lot of sitting around, being in meetings, means that you lack movement and therefore, should sweat more doing physical exercise.     There is also the aspect of your goal. If you just want to be fit and maintain a healthy heart, then a good 30-minute work- out is enough. But if your goal is to burn fat and lose weight, then at least 45 minutes of strenuous, heart-stopping exercise will be more appropriate.

Why exercise is considered a magic pill? Research has shown that the simple prescription of exercise has the potential to prevent and treat more disease than any other therapy. In fact, if exercise were a “drug” it would be the most powerful ever prescribed.

What are the benefits of exercise?

It is okay to eat so long as we are able to discipline ourselves to go to the gym or do other forms of exercise like running or biking. Coupled with a healthy diet, exercise keeps the weight off.

This is the best motivation for people to exercise.  But if it does not become a habit, people easily lose interest after a few weeks, and revert to their old lifestyle of eating more while heaving less physical activity.

People who are inactive are the ones who tend to put on more weight.  Exercise or physical activity increases our metabolic rate or the rate at which the body burns calories. A proper diet combined with regular exercise is best to keep the weight off.

Workout - look good, feel good
Anybody who exercises always has a smile for everyone and has a pleasant disposition in life. This alone is the greatest incentive to keep our bodies active through exercise.

Let’s face it. It is always obvious with the way one looks, whether he or she is a person who regularly frequents the gym. You will know with the way that they stand or their body posture, with their stride, or their over-all appearance. It’s a great bonus that their clothes also fit better and their skin seems to glow and appear more radiant.

Exercise has been shown to elevate your mood. I have never seen a person who felt sad after exercise. If you look around the gym, and observe the people that are working out a sweat, you would notice that most of them are smiling and are more friendly towards others.

Exercise produces changes in the brain that regulate stress and anxiety. Have you heard of the happy hormones, also known as “endorphins”? This hormone is produced during exercise which produces a happy feeling and a reduction of pain. It has been shown that people who stopped exercising for a period of 2 weeks immediately have an altered mental state and were more prone to feeling sad and depressed.

People who exercise generally look 10 years younger than their age. This is due to the healthy blood circulation that keep our cell healthy.

Your skin can be affected by the amount of oxidative stress in your body. Oxidative stress occurs when the body’s antioxidant defenses cannot completely repair the damage that free radicals cause to cells. This can damage their internal structures and deteriorate your skin.  Even though intense and exhaustive physical activity can contribute to oxidative damage, regular moderate exercise can increase your body’s production of natural antioxidants, which help protect cells.

In the same way, exercise can stimulate blood flow and induce skin cell adaptations that can help delay the appearance of skin aging.

After a physical activity, our body craves for rest. That is the reason why people who regularly exercise enjoy better sleep.

Regular exercise can help you relax and sleep better. Of the handful of studies that have been performed, they suggest that exercise significantly improves the sleep of people with chronic insomnia. The only study that looked at the effects of a single exercise session found that a bout of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (e.g., walking) reduced the time it took to fall asleep and increased the length of sleep of people with chronic insomnia compared to a night in which they did not exercise Similar results have been found for studies that examined the effects of long-term exercise on sleep in adults with insomnia. In these studies, after 4 to 24 weeks of exercise, adults with insomnia fell asleep more quickly, slept slightly longer, and had better sleep quality than before they began exercising.

There many diseases that can be prevented or controlled by regular exercise. A simple 30 mins walk in the neighborhood is already enough to keep us in great shape if done regularly.

If you have a chronic disease — such as heart disease, diabetes, asthma, or back or joint pain — exercise can have important health benefits.

Heart disease. Regular exercise can help improve your heart health. Recent studies have shown that interval training is often tolerated well in people with heart disease, and it can produce significant benefits.

Diabetes. Regular exercise can help insulin more effectively lower your blood sugar level. Physical activity can also help you control your weight and boost your energy.

Asthma. Often, exercise can help control the frequency and severity of asthma attacks.

Back pain. Regular low-impact aerobic activities can increase strength and endurance in your back and improve muscle function. Abdominal and back muscle exercises (core-strengthening exercises) may help reduce symptoms by strengthening the muscles around your spine.

Arthritis. Exercise can reduce pain, help maintain muscle strength in affected joints and reduce joint stiffness
